Walnut Rock Radio
Experimental Form, Interactive Hardware
Walnut Rock Radio
The Walnut Rock Radio is an experiment in re-imagining what radio controls can be instead of dials and buttons.
Spring 2017 — 4 weeks
Skills: 3D prototyping, physical computing, wood working
The different types of rocks change stations and the weight of many rocks tilts the radio to change volume. By placing rocks in the center, you have organic control over the radio. Less and more rocks on one side of the radio change and communicate what volume the radio is on. Inspired by zen garden rocks.
Design and Fabrication Process
When designing the final radio form, I drew inspiration from two previous projects:
1. Walnut Rock Balance
2. Foam core Tilt Radio
The fabrication process was in two parts:
1. Physical Computing
Arduino Uno
FM Radio Tuner
Accelerometer
RFID Reader + RFID Capsule x 5 (for 5 different stations)
2. Walnut Wood Radio Container
Solidworks top then CNC'd
Semi-circle container
